The DroneCAN Adapter is designed to provide seamless connectivity between any LightWare LiDAR rangefinder, and a DroneCAN enabled flight controller.

DroneCAN is the primary CAN protocol used by the ArduPilot and PX4 projects for communication with CAN peripherals. It is an open protocol with open communication, specification and multiple open implementations.

LightWare ensured full compliance to an appropriate set of standard DroneCAN messages for device configuration, management, and LiDAR range output, to ensure out-of-the-box interoperability between a LightWare sensor and a DroneCAN enabled controller. This is a major step forward in significantly reducing the time-to-first result for prototype developers using LightWare sensors, while reducing the probability of errors in physical and command interfaces.

The LightWare DroneCAN adapter supports the complete range of LightWare LiDAR rangefinder sensors and will provide basic start-up functionality for all sensors. Furthermore, support for pass-through firmware updates ensures that firmware updates can be performed on both the DroneCAN adapter and the LightWare device connected to it using either a direct serial connection, or via DroneCAN itself, unlocking unmatched ease of upgrading in the field.

The DroneCAN adapter board is pre-populated with connectors suitable for interconnectivity to all LightWare sensors.

Weighing in at only 3.14g, and consuming 0.075W of power, the DroneCAN adapter follows LightWare’s world-leading design principles of ultra compact, super low weight and very low power consumption.
